The LMI was created in 1996 by a group of researchers interested in developing the area of inorganic synthesis using the X-ray diffraction in monocrystal as a method of determining molecular structures. Recently, the group received the Certificate of Excellence in Research Center, with the approval of the project Synthesis, Characterisation and Crystallochemistry of Tectons - Analysis of tectonic arrangements, via the PRONEX Program, supported by the Government of the State of Rio Grande do Sul and CNPq.

Currently, the research group has a large number of researchers in interdisciplinary areas, for graduate students and scientific initiation. The action with other research groups are consolidating the area of structural analysis and resulted in the creation of a integrated "net" of devices: LA3D – Laboratory of Tridimensional Analyses (http://www.ufsm.br/la3d - site under construction)

Cooperation

The work of LMI in the research of nanostructured materials called the atention of the TSM Company. This company is interested in the development of new products useful for aerospacial devices and military components.
